Aquatic trends that’ll make you feel like a mermaid

Today, emoji’s speak louder than text. Just look around you. People have become highly visualised. Summer icons like the pineapple or flamingo in their references are a testament to how fast-fashion brands and online retailers have reacted to the need for emoji-inspired products that appeal to Millennials who are early adopters of visual forms of communication.

Typically, the chosen symbols are bright, inoffensive and multi-generational. For a while the unicorn dominated but mermaids have begun to swim their way back to the forefront of pop culture as the symbol of summer 2018.

Dr Sarah Peverley is a Professor of English at the University of Liverpool wrote a book on the cultural history of the mermaid. “There’s never really been a time in which mermaids haven’t been with us in literature, art and culture,” she says. “The symbolism attributed to mermaids still persists; they embody difference, personal freedom and the natural world. Across social media the examples I’ve seen appear to denote personal liberty or the idea of escapism.”

Why do you think mermaids are making such a big splash these days?

“Perhaps part of the mermaid’s current appeal is that they’re frequently perceived as independent. They possess a serenity and oneness with the world that is hard to obtain in our constantly switched on and fast-paced world. A #MermaidLife is a magical life, full of possibility and wonder,” she concludes.

There’s a timeless appeal to fish scale prints, and the shades of aqua, blue, green, and purple we all associate with beautiful mermaids.

No wonder the fish scale motive has designers hooked.

The Moroccan fish scale decor trend that is taking over Pinterest is exactly what you need to give your home a fresh new look. This aquatic trend brings the soothing, oceanic movement into any space with the repetitive, overlapping pattern reminiscent of rolling waves.

This unique shape is particularly eye-catching and provides designers with an extremely versatile décor aspect that can be brought in through ceramic tiles, wallpaper, furniture textures and mere patterns. Depending on the space, the colours can be uniform, move from lighter to darker or even gently contrast to create a more psychotropical effect.

There are endless ways to add this magical trend to your home without going full-on Little Mermaid.
